There is no better way to feel how big Montenegro really is than to drive from the warm coast up into the Durmitor mountains in a single day. Crno jezero — the Black Lake — sits in an alpine bowl near Žabljak, ringed by black pines and the grey wall of the massif behind it. It is a long day out, but an unforgettable one, and with your own car you can leave at dawn and chase the light home.
How long the drive really takes
From Kotor or the Budva coast to Žabljak is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours one way in good conditions — and that is the honest, no-stops figure. In summer traffic, behind a slow truck on the canyon road, or with the photo stops you will absolutely want, it stretches well past that. Treat this as a full day, not a quick morning errand: leaving the coast by 7-8am and being back for a late dinner is a realistic, relaxed plan.
The route climbs steadily from sea level to about 1,450m at Žabljak, so expect ears to pop, temperatures to drop, and the scenery to change completely. Times here are rough and depend on traffic and season — never treat them as a timetable.
The road north, stop by stop
Most coast-to-Durmitor routes run inland via Podgorica, then climb through the Tara region toward Žabljak. The mountain stretch is genuinely spectacular, threading river gorges and pine forest. Two notes before you set off:
- Around the Bay of Kotor you may use the Vrmac tunnel to shortcut the inner bay. For 2026, treat it as subject to roadworks and possible closures — check locally before you rely on it, and keep the scenic bay road as a fallback.
- The main paved route to Žabljak is fine in a normal car. A 4x4 is not required for the standard approach; you would only want one for rough back-roads or deep off-season snow.

Žabljak as your base
Žabljak is the highest town in the Balkans and the gateway to Durmitor National Park. It is small and practical rather than pretty — think fuel, a supermarket, cafes, and somewhere to use the bathroom before the trail. Fill the tank here if you are running low; stations get sparse the deeper you go into the mountains. From the town centre the lake is only a few minutes' drive.
Parking and the park entry
From Žabljak, follow signs for Crno jezero. There is a car park near the lake entrance; in peak summer it fills early, so an early start helps here too. You pay a small national-park entry fee per person to walk in — bring a little cash, as card isn't guaranteed at the gate.

Walking the lake loop
The classic walk is the circuit of the Black Lake — about 3.5 km on a mostly flat, well-marked path around the shore. It is easy and family-friendly, with no real climbing, and most people take an hour to ninety minutes with stops for photos and a paddle. Early summer can leave parts of the path muddy or snow-fringed; by July and August it is dry and busy. Wear proper shoes, bring water and a layer — even in August the mountain air is cooler than the coast.
Practical notes for the day
- Start early. The drive eats the morning; an early departure buys you a calm lake before the crowds and a safe daylight drive home.
- Pack layers and water. You will leave 30°C on the coast and arrive somewhere notably cooler and higher.
- Fuel up in Podgorica or Žabljak. Don't gamble on remote mountain stations.
