Serbia is one of the most rewarding road trips you can make from Montenegro — and one of the most underrated. Belgrade is roughly six to seven hours from the coast (traffic- and season-dependent), and the drive there is half the pleasure: deep canyons, mountain passes and the Tara and Lim river valleys. Taking your rental across is completely normal here, but it isn't automatic. One rule decides whether the day goes smoothly: tell us before you travel, not at the barrier.
The route north
There's no coastal shortcut to Serbia — the road runs inland and uphill. From Budva or Kotor you climb toward Podgorica, then head north through Kolašin, Mojkovac and Bijelo Polje, following the Morača and Tara canyons before the final stretch to the border. From there it's on toward Prijepolje, Nova Varoš and eventually Belgrade.
It's a genuine mountain drive: long ascents, tunnels, switchbacks and stretches where overtaking is limited. Take it steadily, keep fuel topped up between towns, and budget more time than a map's raw estimate. The main border crossings
The usual gateway toward Serbia is in the north, beyond Bijelo Polje. Two names you'll see:

These are quieter than the coastal posts toward Croatia, but queues still build at peak holiday times and on summer weekends. Cross early or late when you can, and have everyone's documents out before you reach the booth — it speeds the whole line.
Declare it at booking
Cross-border travel has to be agreed in advance and noted on your rental agreement. When you book, say that you're heading to Serbia — even a single overnight in Belgrade counts. We then prepare the right paperwork and mark Serbia as a permitted country.
If you only decide after pickup, message us first. We can usually still arrange it, but a border officer who finds a car not authorised to leave can turn you back — and your cover may not apply outside Montenegro without it. Don't gamble at the barrier.
Green card insurance
The Green Card is internationally recognised proof that your vehicle's liability insurance is valid abroad. For a Montenegro rental entering Serbia, it's the document that keeps you legal once you leave the country, and Serbia must be marked as active on it.
This is exactly why declaring your route at booking matters — we can only activate countries we know about. Keep the green card with your rental agreement and licence; you may be asked for it at the border or in a roadside check.
What to carry
Whatever the season, have these in the car:
- Passport (and a visa if your nationality needs one)
- Driving licence — most national licences are fine; an IDP is wise for some nationalities
- Vehicle registration and the green card
- Your rental agreement showing cross-border permission to Serbia
- A card and some cash — Serbia uses the dinar (RSD), not the euro, so keep a little for the first toll or coffee
Montenegro's own kit — warning triangle, hi-vis vest, first-aid box — stays in the boot.
Mountain driving and the seasons
The northern route climbs high, so weather matters. From roughly mid-November to late March you must carry winter tyres or chains, and passes around Kolašin can see snow well into spring. Even in summer, mountain weather turns quickly and fuel stations thin out between towns — fill up in the larger ones.
2026 note: the new Vrmac tunnel near Kotor is expected to ease the Bay-area approach toward Tivat and Budva, but check its current status before relying on it, as opening timelines can shift.
