Where to rent: airport meet-and-greet vs counters
Most visitors arrive at Tivat (TIV) or Podgorica (TGD). You can queue at an in-terminal counter, or skip it entirely. Documents and minimum age
Keep it simple. To rent and drive you'll need:
- A valid driving licence held for a reasonable period — EU and most national licences are accepted; some non-European nationalities should also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP).
- Your passport or ID.
- A credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit.

Deposit and insurance basics
Every rental includes third-party insurance plus collision and theft cover with an excess (the capped amount you'd owe for damage). A refundable deposit is held on a credit card at pickup and released after return, assuming the car comes back as it left.
You can usually reduce or remove the excess with an extra cover option. The difference between excess, deposit, and "full" cover trips up most first-timers, so it's worth five minutes: read car rental insurance and deposit explained before you pick.
Pay at pickup, free cancellation

Automatic vs manual
Montenegro is mountainous, and the coast and serpentines mean lots of gear changes on steep, winding roads. If you're not fully confident with a stick shift on hills, choose an automatic — it's far less tiring on the Kotor–Lovćen hairpins and in stop-start coastal traffic. Manuals are common and economical if you're comfortable with them. Automatics are popular and limited, so book ahead.
Driving rules and tolls, in brief
Montenegro drives on the right. A few essentials:
- Typical limits: 50 km/h in towns, 80 on the open road, 100–130 on signed expressway sections.
- The alcohol limit is near zero — treat drinking and driving as completely off-limits.
- Seatbelts for everyone; phones hands-free; dipped headlights are advised at all times.
- Most roads are toll-free; the Sozina tunnel (Bar–Podgorica) has a small car toll.

Crossing borders

What to check at handover
Spend five minutes before you drive off:
- Walk around the car and photograph any existing scratches, dents or chips.
- Confirm the fuel level (we run full-to-full — collect full, return full).
- Check lights, wipers, tyres and that the spare and documents are in the car.
- Make sure you have our contact number saved.
