Some of Montenegro's prettiest coves don't sit on the main coastal highway — they're tucked at the end of a winding road on the Luštica peninsula. Žanjic and Mirište reward the drive with clear water, pebble beaches, and far fewer crowds than Budva. With your own car you set the pace, leave when the day-trip boats arrive, and stay until the light goes golden.
Why Luštica beats the Budva crowds
Budva is lively, but in July and August it can feel like the whole coast showed up at once. Luštica is the antidote. Žanjic is a wide pebble cove framed by olive groves; Mirište is its quieter, smaller neighbour a short hop away. Both have a handful of beach restaurants (konobas), sunbeds, and calm, swimmable water.
The trade-off is access. There's no train and limited public transport out here, so a car turns a logistical headache into a 40-minute scenic drive. Renting also frees you to combine the beaches with a boat trip to the Blue Cave — more on that below.
Getting there: the drive from Tivat & Herceg Novi
Luštica wraps around the outer Bay of Kotor, so both major arrival points are close. Times below are rough and depend heavily on summer traffic and the Verige ferry queues.

2026 caveat: the Vrmac tunnel and surrounding works can change traffic patterns and routing around Tivat. Treat any single-route estimate as approximate, follow live navigation on the day, and leave a buffer.
The road itself
The final stretch onto Luštica is the fun part — a narrow, twisting two-lane road through olive groves and stone villages, with the open Adriatic flashing into view between the hills. It's perfectly drivable in a normal car, but it asks for attention:
- Take the bends slowly; some are blind and tight.
- Expect the occasional oncoming bus or delivery van — be ready to ease over.
- The last descent to the coves is steep in places; use a low gear.
- Phone signal can dip, so download your map offline before you leave.
Parking at Žanjic & Mirište
There's no large structured car park, so plan around demand. In high season the informal roadside and field parking near Žanjic fills by late morning, and you may pay a small attendant fee in cash. Mirište is tighter still.
The simple rule: arrive before 11:00 or come for the late afternoon as the day boats leave. Keep small euro notes for parking and the konobas, and never block the narrow access lane — emergency and supply vehicles use it constantly.
Boat trips to the Blue Cave (Plava špilja)
The headline excursion from Žanjic is the Blue Cave, a sea grotto where sunlight refracts through the water to glow an electric blue. Small boats run the short hop along the coast, often pausing at hidden swimming spots and passing the islet of Mamula and the Our Lady of Mercy chapel on Žanjic itself.
A few practical notes:
- Boats leave directly from Žanjic beach — you'll see operators with signboards.
- The cave is at its bluest in late morning to early afternoon, when the sun is high.
- Trips are short (roughly an hour or two) and weather-dependent — choppy seas can cancel them.
- Bring a swimsuit; the magic is jumping in inside the cave.
Because prices, schedules, and operators vary by season, ask at the beach on the day rather than pre-booking blind.
Make a day of it
Luštica works best unhurried. Swim at Žanjic in the morning, take the Blue Cave boat before lunch, eat fresh fish at a konoba, then drift over to Mirište for a quieter afternoon swim. With a car you can also detour to the cliffs above Mamula or stop at a viewpoint on the drive back as the bay lights up.
